A Journey of Courage and Care: Successfully Managing Placenta Accreta at Unico Hospital

High-risk pregnancies demand not only advanced medical expertise but also careful planning, teamwork, and compassion. At Unico Hospital, one such complex journey became a story of clinical excellence and coordinated care.

Ms. Shahlina Akhter, a 35-year-old expectant mother with a history of two previous cesarean deliveries and prior abdominal surgery, came to Unico Hospitals PLC at around 30 weeks of pregnancy after experiencing sudden bleeding (Antepartum hemorrhage). Following immediate evaluation and stabilization, she was diagnosed with central placenta previa.

Further investigations at 32 weeks, including ultrasound and MRI, confirmed a serious condition known as Placenta Accreta Syndrome (PAS) is a life-threatening disorder where the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall. PAS is associated with severe bleeding during delivery and can endanger both mother and baby if not managed with extreme care.

A Team-Based Approach to a High-Risk Condition

Recognizing the complexity of the case, Unico Hospital activated a comprehensive multidisciplinary care plan under the leadership of the Obstetrics & Gynaecology team: Prof. Dr. Fatema Ashraf, Dr.Fatema Yasmin, Dr. Sanjida Rahman and the Chief of Medical Services, Brig. Gen. (Retd.) Dr. Sharif Ahmed.

A highly coordinated team of specialists worked together with a single, shared priority: the safety of both mother and child. The team included experts from Blood Bank and Transfusion Services (Dr. KaziNowshad Hossain); Anesthesia and Critical Care (Brig. Gen. Prof. Dr. Hasan Murshed); Neonatology and NICU; Urology (Dr. SharifShahjamal); Surgery (Dr. Md. Masudar Rahman); Emergency Medicine (Dr. G. W. M. Zahidul Hasan); Diagnostic & Interventional Radiology (Dr. Bidyut Kumar Saha); Clinical Nursing (Elizabeth Jothi); Nutrition (Jannatun Noor Naima); along with the Hospital Coordination Team, Operating Theatre In-Charge and Surgical Support Team, Security Department, and Patient & Guest Relations.

This seamless collaboration ensured round-the-clock preparedness, precise planning, and flawless execution of care for this high-risk pregnancy.

Planned Surgery, Successful Outcome

With close monitoring through follow-up scans at 34 and 36 weeks, the clinical team carefully planned the timing of surgery and ensured all resources was including blood products, surgical backup, and neonatal care were ready well in advance.

The delivery and planned peripartum hysterectomy were performed smoothly by an experienced obstetric team, supported by expert anesthesiologists, surgeons, urologists, and a fully prepared NICU team. The surgery was conducted with precision, and both mother and baby remained stable throughout.

A Happy Ending Built on Preparation and Compassion

The postoperative recovery was smooth, and both mother and newborn were discharged on the 4th postoperative day, healthy and smiling, bringing a journey filled with anxiety to a joyful and confident conclusion.
