Palliative Medicine
Compassionate Holistic Care for People Living with Serious Illness and Their Families
Patient-Centered Palliative Care
Department of Palliative Medicine at Unico Hospitals is
specifically designed for people living with serious, life-limiting, or
advanced chronic illnesses, and for their families, who need care that goes
beyond disease treatment alone. Palliative care focuses on relieving pain and
distressing physical, psycho-social and spiritual symptoms, supporting
difficult decisions, and improving day-to-day quality of life at every stage of
a serious illness, from the time of diagnosis through survivorship, advanced disease,
or end-of-life care. In keeping with Unico's philosophy of Care, “Crae, as
unique as you”, every palliative care plan is built around the individual, not
the diagnosis. Each plan reflects a patient's own symptoms, priorities, values,
and family circumstances, developed together with the patient and their loved
ones rather than decided for them.
Who Can Be Benefited by Palliative Care
Palliative care is often misunderstood as care only for the final
days of life. In reality, it can benefit a wide range of patients from the
point of diagnosis onward, along with its ongoing curative/regular treatment including:
- Cancer, at any stage of illness
- Organ failure, including heart,
lung, kidney, or liver diseases
- Progressive neurological
conditions, post stroke disability and dementia
- Patients with multiple chronic
illnesses affecting daily function
- Elderly patients with frailty or
declining independence
- Critically ill patients and
families needing guidance on complex treatment decisions
- Children with life-limiting or
complex medical conditions, and their families
- Families needing emotional support
and guidance through serious illness
- Bereaved families who have lost
their loved ones
Interdisciplinary Care at Corporate Level
Our team brings together Palliative Medicine specialist,
physicians from referring specialties, specially trained nurses and allied
health professionals, working within standardized protocols and quality
processes so that every patient receives consistent, well-coordinated care.
This structured, institutional approach, built into the hospital's core
departments rather than offered as an informal add-on service, represents a
meaningful step forward for palliative care in Bangladesh's corporate hospital
landscape, and reflects Unico's commitment to bringing internationally
recognized standards of holistic care into everyday practice.
