Overview of the Department of Clinical Hematology

Clinical hematology is a branch of medicine focused on diagnosing, treating, and managing disorders affecting the blood and blood-forming tissues. It encompasses various conditions, ranging from benign disorders to malignant diseases, and requires an in-depth understanding of hematopoiesis (blood cell formation), coagulation, and immune function.

Department of Hematology of UNICO HOSPITAL PLC is offering the following services:

Benign Hematological Disorders:

  • Anemia: Iron-deficiency anemia, megaloblastic anemia, aplastic anemia, hemolytic anemia. 
  • Hemoglobinopathies: HbE trait and Disease, Sickle cell trait and disease, thalassemias (beta and alpha).
  • Bleeding Disorders: Hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, platelet function disorders, and other acquired coagulation disorders. 
  • Thrombophilias: Conditions predisposing to clot formation (e.g., Factor V Leiden mutation, protein C/S deficiency).
  • Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes: Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), pancytopenias.


Malignant Hematological Disorders:

  • Leukemias: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).

  •  Indications for packed red blood cells, platelets, plasma, and cryoprecipitate.
  • Management of transfusion reactions.
  • Role of apheresis in hematologic disorders.


Infections in Hematology:

  •  Management of immunocompromised patients with neutropenia, especially during chemotherapy.
  • Prophylaxis for fungal, viral, and bacterial infections.
